4D Lottery Explained: How the Four-Digit Draw, Box Entries and Ticket Checks Work

Three things to understand

  1. There are 10,000 possible four-digit numbers, from 0000 to 9999.
  2. A permutation entry covers several orderings of the same digits at a higher cost.
  3. A ticket is only valid once it has been accepted and confirmed.

A 4D ticket looks simple, but small details such as a leading zero or an entry type can change what you have bought. This guide explains the four-digit draw, the odds of a single number, how permutation entries work, and how to confirm both the ticket and the result.

What does a 4D draw involve?

A 4D draw selects four-digit numbers from 0000 to 9999, so there are 10,000 possibilities. Your selection wins a prize category if it matches a drawn number as defined by the ticket type.

Providers such as JJVIP, JJ4D, GD Lotto and Nine Lotto run separate draws. Confirm which provider and draw date your ticket belongs to.

What are the odds for a single number?

If every four-digit number is equally likely for a specified prize position, an exact number has a 1 in 10,000 chance at that position. A 4D draw typically has several prize positions, so the chance of matching any prize is higher, though each prize has its own payout.

Do not assume that numbers which appeared recently are more or less likely. Each draw is independent.

Why do leading zeros and digit order matter?

The number 0123 is not the same as 123 or 1230. All four digits must be entered in the correct order, including zeros at the start.

Compare the number on your screen with the one you intended before confirming. A screenshot of the form cannot rescue a number entered incorrectly.

How do permutation and combination entries work?

A permutation or box entry covers several orderings of the same digits. Four different digits have 24 distinct orderings. Covering all of them increases the number of covered outcomes, but cost and payout depend on whether the provider quotes a per-combination stake or a stake divided across combinations. A box does not have one universal price or payout rule.

Check how your provider defines these entry types and what each costs in total.

How do you confirm the ticket?

Review the provider, draw date, digits, entry type, stake and currency. Keep the confirmation or ticket reference so you can compare it with the result later.

An unsubmitted selection or an image of a number is not proof of an accepted entry. Wait for the confirmation before assuming the ticket is valid.

How do you check results sensibly?

Use the provider's official result for the draw on your ticket. Matching a number to the wrong draw is a common mistake.

Past numbers and repeated patterns do not predict the next draw. Set a fixed limit and avoid buying more entries to recover a previous loss.

A worked box example

Take the number 1123, which has a repeated digit. It has 12 distinct orderings, not 24, because swapping the two ones changes nothing. A number with four different digits, like 1234, has 24.

At a fixed price per combination, covering 12 combinations costs less than covering 24. Some products instead divide a chosen total stake across combinations, so confirm the displayed calculation, number of selections and payout basis.

Questions worth asking

What are the odds of winning 4D?

A specific number has a 1 in 10,000 chance per prize position. Overall chances depend on the prize structure.

Is a box entry better than a straight entry?

It increases the chance of matching but pays less per win and costs more, so it is a different trade-off.

Can I change a ticket after confirmation?

Generally no. Check every detail before you confirm.

How do I avoid entering a number wrongly?

Read the number aloud from the confirmation screen and compare it digit by digit with your intention, paying special attention to leading zeros and repeated digits.
